Provided in this section are answers to some of the Frequently Asked Questions about the T&D Online MEd program. If you have additional questions which are not addressed here, please contact us.
The T&D Online M.Ed. is designed for people who are involved in training/Human Resource Development positions in business, industry, education, and not-for profit organizations or for those who are planning for those careers. Specifically the distance education option has been developed for those who, based on geographic location, work schedules, or other restrictions, are unable to attend classes on campus and for those who prefer to complete a masters degree via distance education. The degree program does not specifically develop skills in the design and delivery of distance education programs nor is it a general degree for anyone who wants to earn a degree via distance education. [back to top] A cohort is a group of students admitted at the same time into a program and enroll in all of their courses together. Although building an online learning community is very important in distance education, we realize that all students may not be able to maintain a schedule of more than one course per term. For this reason, the online M.Ed. program is NOT a cohort-based program. Students are required to maintain continuous enrollment in the Fall and Spring semesters, but are not required to enroll in more than one course per term. However, students must adhere to course prerequisites when planning their schedules. [back to top] Students in the distance education M.Ed. in training and development are required to attend a 1-day on-campus orientation and technology development experience scheduled prior to the start of courswork. There are no other on-campus requirements although students are encouraged to visit the campus, avail themselves of campus resources, participate in NC State activities, and meet with advisors, faculty and other students throughout the program. [back to top] At a minimum, participants must have ready access to a PC desktop or laptop computer that meets or (preferably) exceeds the NC State recommendations for computers you already own. While this configuration is sufficient, we recommend that participants upgrade their current machine or consider purchasing a computer that meets (or exceeds) the recommendations for new computer purchases. Connectivity: At a minimum, students must have dial-up access with a 56k modem. To improve access speed and enhance the playback quality of video/audio materials, we strongly suggest that students who are accessing courses from home consider investing in a high-speed Internet service. Educationally priced versions of word processing and other software is available for purchase at the NCSU Bookstores (http://www.fis.ncsu.edu/ncsubookstores/computers.html). Students must also have a Web browser that is approved for use with Vista, the course management system used in this program. [back to top] Because the program is not lock-step, you have choices of how many courses to take per term and what courses to take. Most students are employed full-time and therefore try to take one or two courses per term. To help assist your course scheduling, we provide examples of schedules you might choose depending on whether you want to take one or two courses per term: Students not admitted into the M.Ed. in Training and Development or are waiting for admission, can take the courses as a post-baccalaureate studies (PBS) student. To do this you must register through the distance learning office. Note that any courses you intending ion transferring into the degree program must be less than 5 years old and you may only transfer in up to 4 courses upon advisor approval.[back to top] Yes, applicants are required to send a copy of their GRE test scores in order to be considered for the program. Scores must be recent (test taken within the last five years.) The GRE is the only acceptable admissions test for this program .Click here to see more information about about admissions tests (pdf). [back to top] Distance classes are registered through the NCSU Pack Tracks system. Current tuition information can be obtain through the office of Distance Education. You can access information about the cost of current training and development courses at http://distance.ncsu.edu/tuition/graduatetuition.html . For 2007-2008, the cost for a 3-credit hour graduate-level course was $678 for in-state students and $1305 for out-of-state students. In addition to tuition costs, you can expect an average of $150 to A limited amount of grant funding is available to students who are enrolled in Distance Education degree programs or who are working towards admission to a Distance Education degree program. Criteria for funding is based on academic merit, demonstrated financial need, and enrollment in multiple DE courses per semester.
