Master of Science (M.S.)
in Human Resource Development (HRD)
Program Overview
The Master of Science degree program in HRD focuses on the theory
and principles of adult education and human resource development. This
program assumes the student is seeking research-intensive study. Because this degree focuses on research, it differs from the M.Ed. which focuses on practice. Both Degree programs require rigorous coursework, with the M.S. requiring a research-based thesis and the M.Ed. a problem-based paper. Students enrolled in the M.S. degree program are required to have a three-member
graduate committee including one person representing the course work from
outside the department.
Curriculum
The M.S. program reflects a minimum requirement of 36 hours of course
work including statistics, research, and a thesis. In addition, all graduate
students are expected to either pass the AHE technology competencies through
a testing out procedure or to attend a workshop at the beginning of their
studies. Further information is noted on the department's technology
page.
Any course work taken prior to admission is subject to approval by the
student's advisor for inclusion in the program. For a listing of the course
requirements, please consult the program worksheet or contact the Program Coordinator listed at the bottom of this page. For course descriptions, refer to the NCSU listing
of courses.
Admission Information
Please refer to the departmental admissions
page for complete information on requirements and the application
period.
Transfer from the M.Ed. to the M.S.
Students currently enrolled in the M.Ed. degree in Training and Development
who are interested in transferring to the M.S. degree must submit a rationale
for the transfer. This rationale should include goals and objectives for
this research-intensive degree. In addition, students should submit a
preliminary plan detailing possible ideas, research questions, and/or
topics for the thesis. These materials will be reviewed by the Training
and Development faculty. The student will be contacted regarding the faculty
decision. This request and supporting materials must be received by the
M.S. program coordinator no later than the regular application deadline
for the semester of transfer (January 20 for fall and August 20 for spring.)
