Background

Dr. Don Martin received his B.A. from Metropolitan State College of Denver with summa cum laude honors. His dual majors were English with secondary teaching emphasis and Instructional Systems Design. After graduation, Dr. Martin returned to Metropolitan State College, completing B.S. work in computer science with emphasis in management information systems. Dr. Martin received a Master’s of Arts in Management with emphases in Human Relations and Organizational Behavior from the University of Phoenix. He completed his doctorate at North Carolina State University where he majored in Human Resource Development and Educational Research and Statistics.

Prior to joining the faculty at NCSU, Dr. Martin worked extensively in business, industry, and public organizations. He served as liaison to the US Air Force Human Resources Laboratory from 1975 – 1980 where he managed USAF’s first computer-based training development program. After leaving the USAF, he worked for Rockwell International Corporation where he held positions as Manager, Computer Services, Small Wind Energy Conversion Systems; Manager, Plant Training at the Rocky Flats Plant; and Sr. Organizational Development Specialist. Additionally, Dr. Martin served in senior advisory positions to the US Department of Energy’s Weapons Complex Group. Dr. Martin joined Nortel in 1987 as Manager, Computer-based Training Development at Nortel’s Customer Training Center. He also led efforts at Nortel to develop performance-based customer documentation and to develop technology-enabled document storage and retrieval.

Dr. Martin worked for the NC Department of Community Colleges as Coordinator of Federal Education Programs. After leaving NCDCC, he worked in collaboration with member colleges to conduct several statewide program evaluations.

For the five years before joining NCSU in 1996, Dr. Martin conducted funded-research and maintained an active private practice. Since becoming a faculty member, he has secured grants and contracts in excess of $250,000 for the development of technology-enabled programs for the NC Department of Transportation, US Department of Commerce, US Army Research Institute, Vance County Schools, Vance-Granville Community Colleges, and the NC Department of Community Colleges.

Teaching

Dr. Martin teaches in the areas of instructional design, technology-based learning, and organizational behavior. He worked with Dr. Jim Burrow in the development of the masters and doctoral curriculum with specializations in Assessment and Evaluation and Technology. He has developed learning using mixed media such as internet, CD-ROM, video, etc. He has taught the following courses:

Research

Current research interests include assessing organizational climate toward technology; identifying barriers to the adoption of innovative uses of technology; defining best practices in the use of technology; and identifying technology competencies for educators, trainers, and employees.

Service

Dr. Martin has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Academy of Human Resource Development (AHRD) and founding President of the AHRD Foundation. He is an active member of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI), American Education Research Association (AERA), Society for Applied Learning Technologies (SALT), Society of Industrial/Organizational Psychology (SIOP), and the American Psychological Association (APA).Dr. Martin was co-chair of the 2000 AHRD International Conference. He is a frequent presenter at national and international conferences and symposia relating to his fields of interest.
